Journal 11 Chapter 15 11/15/16

Chapter 15 is the last chapter of the book. It starts off with a conversation between Graff and Anderson. They talk about what they will be doing since the war is over. Anderson knows that Graff knows who Demosthenes and Locke really are but Graff doesn't admit it. Ender becomes Admiral in Eros. He sees videos of Stilson and Bonzo's murders and feels bad but also thinks its funny that killing buggers is not considered a crime.
Valentine convinces Ender to go with her on the colonization effort. Ender agrees but says he is only going because he "knows the buggers better than any other living soul" but he is going as Ender Wiggins. During the trip, Valentine writes a book on the buggers war. When they get arrive Enders feels like he's been there before because it is familiar to him. He realizes the landscape is from the Giant game. He figures out that the buggers must have been able to see into the game and built it. Behind the mirror he finds the Queen Bugger who is ready to hatch her hundred thousand bugger eggs. Ender realizes is able to see bugger memories and feels badly because he feels guilty about what he did. He asks the Queen how can he help the buggers live and she sends him images of him putting the cocoon in a cool dark place with water and then later helping them come out. At first Ender tells her he can't help because he is afraid that once the buggers are hatched they will come and try and kill humans. The Queen tells him that wouldn't happen because they also feel bad about killing humans the way Ender feels bad about killing buggers. Ender said he wished the Queen could make everyone else feel the same way.
Ender decides to take the cocoon and look for a safe place where it can't be touched so that bugger eggs can hatch. He decides to secretly write a book about the buggers story so that the humans can understand them better and hopefully forgive them. Everyone on earth reads it but no one knows who the author is but Peter figures out that it is Ender before he dies.
"We are like you...We did not mean to murder and when we understood, we never came again. We could live with you in peace. Believe us." - I think this is a good quote because it teaches us that our enemies are more like us than we think. Sometimes you may not like a person and fight with them only to find out that they have the same interests or like the same things that you do, so there was no reason to fight or argue in the first place. We are not that different than our enemies but we have to be willing to want to try and get to know them.

Chapter 14 starts with a conversation between Graff and Admiral Chamrajnagar who is the head of the Command School. Then it switches to Ender being at Eros. He doesn't like being there because he is isolated from everyone but his teachers want it like that because they feel this is the best way for him to become a great leader. He plays on the simulator and enjoys it. He learns a lot from it and how to use strategy to win battles. He is allowed to be the commander of a 4 fighter squadron.
Ender meets Mazer Rackham but he doesn't know who he is at first. Rackham surprises Ender and grabs him one day. He told Ender he should never turn his back on the enemy. They fight and Rackham tells Ender that he will be his teacher and then tells Ender who he really is. They watch videos from the First and Second Invasions and learn strategies from them. Ender is happy that Rackham is his teacher. He feels "for the first time, Ender had found a living mind he could admire". Mazer also tells Ender that he thinks that the Queen bugger is the one that controls all the buggers. Mazer also tells Ender that a lot things that the Fleet uses now comes from things that they found on Eros like gravity manipulation and stellar energy. Mazer also thinks that the buggers killed the humans because they did not know that the humans were intelligent. The humans have Dr. Device which is a new weapon that splits apart molecules so it gives the humans another advantage over the buggers.
Ender trains as a commander and he gets to have Dink, Petra, Bean and Alai back on his team and a few others. They practice and all work together and get along but their friendship starts to suffer but they trust Ender as a commander. He has battle after battle and the stress of it all is getting to him like it did to Petra.
Ender has his final test at Command School. At first he thinks he can't win but then Bean reminds him that "the enemy's gate is down" so that makes Ender want to fight harder. Ender uses Dr. Device and the enemy's planet starts to burst apart. When the test is over, people are clapping and Graff tells Ender he did a great job but Ender is confused by that. Ender does not realize at first that the test was not the simulator but it was really the real thing. And now the bugger planet has been destroyed. Ender is sad and feels sick when he realizes what he has done. He feels tricked by the teachers. He felt that they used and manipulated him the whole time.
I think the quote "there is no teacher but the enemy" is important because the best way to beat someone is to learn from the person you are trying to beat in the first place. That would be your enemy. So you are basically learning from him. Your enemy is the best teacher to teach you how to win. In sports if a team beats you, it makes you want to beat them more the next time you match up with them. A lot of coaches make you look at your opponent's films and highlights so you can see their moves and learn from their plans and strategies.
Journal 9 chapter 13 "Valentine" 11/2/16
In the history of the world, I believe that many wars have been caused by an inability to communicate. I believe the ratio is about 50/50. I think that people don't listen to understand they only listen to listen. I feel that people have their points of view and they are not willing to compromise. If a nation is threatening us we have two options. One is to go to war and attack before they attack us. The other option is to try and negotiate with them and hope to come to some conclusion. In this type of situation, I feel we should try peaceful options first which mean to try to negotiate. War should always be the last option since many people can get killed.
Journal 8 chapter 12
When Ender says that he did not want Bonzo to get hurt, it shows what kind of person Ender is. Ender is a nice, kind person who does not want anyone to get hurt. He does not want to fight but he will if he has to just like when he fights Peter. He loves Peter and does not want to harm him but Peter always like to start a fight with Ender. Peter enjoys fighting. Ender does not. The only thing is that he can not control his anger when he is in a fight and ends up killing Bonzo and Stilson.
I think Ender was crying because he does not mean to hurt anyone. He has compassion. He let the Peter inside of him take over and made him a fighter who wants to win at all costs. He cried because he does not want to be like his brother.

Journal 7 Chapter 11
![Picture](/uploads/5/0/9/7/50974235/manipulate_orig.jpg)
The adults manipulate Ender in this chapter. The first example is that the computer sets a schedule of battles and game alterations which are stacked against Ender. Graff and Anderson both know this but let it play out. Another example is that Dragon Amy's first battle comes after only about three weeks. Most army's get three months of training. Another example is when he has to fight Petra's army he only gets a half an hour notice before he has to participate in the battle. There has never been two battles in two days before. That is unfair to Ender. He ends up having 7 battles in one week. Another example is when he had to fight Bonzo's Salamander Army, Salamander already knew about the battle so they were already in position and it was Enders second battle of the day which was already unfair to him. I think the adults manipulate Ender because they set up hard and unfair battles for him to push him and test him. I don't think that there is a line that they would not cross to make him into the commander that they need.
Journal 6 Chapter 10
I could think of two examples in real life where people's inability to change perspectives can limit and help them. My first example is of a fire fighter who needs to save someone in a burning building. The person trapped is on the top floor but the fire is burning the most on the bottom floor. The fireman does not know how to rescue the person on the top floor without getting burned on the first floor. He did not think to rescue the person by taking a different approach like getting a ladder and going to the top floor.
My second example where using a different perspective can help is when a pilot is able to land a plane safely even though all the monitors stopped working like in the movie Sully.

Journal 5 Chapter 9
I feel that it was ok for the author to focus on Peter and Valentine because it let us see how smart Peter and Valentine really are because they are able to fool everyone. The come up with the internet names Demonthesis and Locke to influence peoples opinions of the war, but the choose opposites of what their personalities are really like. Valentine is nice and wants everyone to be treated nicely and to get along with each other. She does not want to fight. She is more like Locke who is a peacemaker. Demonthesis likes to fight and likes to get people to want to fight. But Peter decides to be Locke because he wants to win over people. His goal is to rule the world. They convince everyone that these are not fake internet accounts and both sides make good points about the war and what the believe. They are young but act very mature.
Journal 4. Chapter 9
Question 1
Some major events that happened in Chapter 9 was that Valentine and Peter use a fake name to go online and post their thoughts on world politics. Peter uses the name Locke and Valentine uses the name Demosthenes. John Locke was an English professor (1632-1704) who thought people can talk out their political differences and issues. He was a peacemaker. Demosthenes is one who wants to see war between the countries. They are opposites. Its funny that Peter chooses that name when he is the opposite of what Locke was and believed in. Peter is not a peacemaker. It’s the same for Valentine. She is really the peacemaker but chooses to use the name Demosthenes for her fake account.
Another event that happened was that Valentine wrote a letter to Ender. She wanted to remind him that he was not an evil person but once Ender read it it made him mad. It just convinced him that the teachers are the enemy. It made him play the game harder and stronger. He didn’t trust anyone.
Question 2
In Chapter 9 Valentine talks about how she feels about Peter and Ender and how different she thinks each of them are. Valentine thinks Peter is mean evil and a fraud. She thinks Peter is good at getting away with everything. He can manipulate people. She is scared of him but she knows what he’s thinking. She thinks “He’s manipulating me, she thought, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t sincere”. She thinks Peter is nothing like Ender. She thinks Ender is nice and doesn’t want to hurt anyone. She says “well maybe I’m like Peter, but Ender isn’t, he isn’t at all, I used to tell him when he cried, I told him that lots of time, you’re not like Peter, you never like to hurt people, you’re kind and good and not like Peter at all!”

Journal 3 "Seed of Doubt"
Dink succeeded in planting a seed of doubt in Ender's mind. He does this by speaking to Ender and sharing what his thoughts are about the International Fleet. Dink tells Ender that the buggers are not going to invade again. Dink feels the IF wants them to believe that buggers are coming, but it is not true. This conversation plants more doubt in Ender's mind. Ender already had doubts that the teachers are the enemies. Ender decides he will listen more carefully to what people meant instead of what they say, it made him wise. The teachers actions are speaking louder that their words.

Journal 1 Chapter 7
Question 1
I do not think that Bonzo Madrid is an effective leader because he is a bully to Ender. He is trying to scare Ender away. For example, Bonzo did not want Ender to battle with the Salamander Army because Bonzo thought that Ender would hold them back so he made Ender sit by the gate and did not allow him to participate. Also Bonzo thinks that Ender is competition because he is smart and that Ender might beat him. Ender plays mind games with Bonzo because he lets Bonzo believe that Bonzo came up with the idea, but it was really Ender's idea. Bonzo knows Ender is right but he will never give him credit. A good leader would give him credit not ignore him.
Question 2
The relevance of the sentence "The Enemy's Gate is Down" is important because it is a way to win the battle. Ender thinks of a different way to attack the enemy even if it means breaking the rules. The enemy expects Ender to attack one way and Ender attacks using a different way. It shows that Ender is smart and can think of ways to win that others haven't tried or would be too scared to try. It reminds Ender he can win if he cheats a little.
